ECOLOGY+ART – Exploring Forest Restoration

This youth-focused workshop invites you to explore forest creation and celebrate your learnings through art. Join indigenous fashion designer/environmentalist Jeanine Clarkin and ecologist/artist Monica Peters as we discover Atawhai Whenua, a community-led restoration project that started in the 1990s. We’ll walk from Matiatia Ferry Terminal through the reserve to learn how it transformed from barren hillside to thriving ngahere forest. You’ll also gain insights into native plants and creatures, as well as their cultural significance.

Next, we’ll walk to the Waiheke Community Art Gallery to explore the Understory Exhibition, showcasing Waiheke’s native forest restoration through local artists’ eyes. Then, at the Gallery’s Makerspace, you’ll create drawings and collages inspired by the exhibition and walk. No art skills needed—just bring your creativity and enjoy!

Getting there: It’s about a 2km walk from Matiatia Ferry Terminal via Atawhai Whenua to the Waiheke Community Art Gallery in Oneroa. Multiple buses are available from the Gallery/Oneroa and other island locations back to Matiatia Ferry Terminal. If traveling from Tāmaki Makaurau/Downtown Auckland, please catch the 9am ferry to arrive on time.

Morning tea provided.

Wear comfy shoes for walking, bring sun protection or rainwear depending on the weather and clothing suitable for walking and making art in.

Age limit 10 years and over.
