Mike Crawshaw's painting, Echo and Narcissus, is an arresting meditation on crisis. Evoking the dystopian future of a J G Ballad or Emily St John Mandel novel, a scene unfolds by the waterfeature of a modernist building. The lights are out and its human inhabitants are nowhere to be seen. Are they sleep inside the house, or have they left? And the emaciated dogs? How did they creep past the security and walls of this gated sanctuary?

There are no easy answers in the painting but much to contemplate...as the dogs play out an all-too-human narrative of insatiable longing and self-obsession.
