Kareao, or supplejack, once ensnared European settlers and was a nuisance and feared symbol of the forest. For Māori, it is a taonga offering protection and life. Weaving kareao into kōwhaiwhai, I reflect on these dual worldviews; what some see as an obstruction is a source of life to others.
