Intimately amassed in a relational offering of potentiality, Kākano materially evidences an abundant life-force.
Seed capsules from the harakeke plant (New Zealand Flax, Phormium Tenax) are carefully selected and gathered over long summer days. Sun-dried, separated, whittled and dehisced, the prepared pods and peduncles are intertwined onto fibre panels. Blackened fibres of jute and hemp yarns are intersected with a panel of finely prepared silken harakeke fibres - coloured in the rich umber hues rendered from fresh green seed pods.
The twined stitch and knotted edge grounds methods of making within the context of human-kinds most ancient textile past in an acknowledgment of a universally shared textile history.
With a textile practice that looks to materiality as a vehicle of conceptual expression, the work offers notions of strength in unity and ongoing possibilities of material transcendence.
