Ceramics Workshop with Sophie Perkins

23 June 2024

Make a poetry plate for precious things

Sorry Sold Out

Sophie Perkins has been making ceramics for 12 years. Initially a printmaker she was interested in clay as another medium to print on. She soon realised ceramics is a whole world into itself – describing it as ‘a curious, frustrating, joyful, journey, where the boundaries only lie in your own ability and the clay’s natural limit’.

Perkins enjoys writing and expressing my poems in clay calling her creations poetry bowls or poetry plates. When working with clay in other ways and gets stuck she always comes back to these meditative little bowls or expansive large plates–she just loves making them!

Sophie enjoys teaching and has been running workshops in hand-built ceramics; pinched, coiled and slab techniques for two years. She derives great pleasure from working with people who are new to clay.

Brief: Make a poetry plate for precious things

In two hours, we will make a small slab and pinched poetry plate, suitable to hold precious things, such as rings, stones and shells.

You will make one plate and then using Sophie’s alphabet stamps, imprint up to five of your own words into your plate. This may be a sentence, “even rivers run quietly here”, or five separate words that connect, such as, “Ruru calls, silence, reply, hope”, or five random words that you particularly like.

Sophie will bisque fire, glaze and refire your work and it will be ready approximately two weeks after the workshop.
