A selection of paintings spanning 50 years of practice.
“I’ve always painted from my imagination rather than attempting to copy reality. I’m interested in colour relationships and movement.” - Jackie Guthrie
Jackie attended Auckland University and graduated as senior scholar with a BSc in botany. She worked at the DSIR in Mt. Albert in a research capacity, was married in 1965 and stayed working until shortly before the birth of her first son in 1968. A second son followed in 1970.
As the children grew her interest in art developed and once they were of school age she was able to attend the Pakuranga Art Society and had lessons from Bill Buckley. This interest really developed following the move to live full time on Waiheke in 1998.
However, prior to this, Jackie's interest in art broadened to cover other art forms. Together with husband Graham, they became regular attendees at gallery openings and steadily built up a collection that includes many of the top artists in the fields of glass, ceramics, sculpture and of course painting.
The house they built on Waiheke was designed by son Julian to showcase this collection. With a dedicated studio and space to show the finished art her career as an artist took off. Her art is primarily abstract, influenced by the surrounding sea and landscapes. Painting always in oils on quality canvases she explores both movement and the relationships of different colours.
