Curated by Hamish Coney, this exhibition features a selection of works from the Kurt von Meier Collection including early studies by Pat Hanly, Gretchen Albrecht, Michael Illingworth, Pauline Thompson, Geoff Thornley and Robert Ellis. The collection was acquired during the early 1960’s–the period von Meier was posted to Elam School of Fine Arts as Senior Lecturer in Art History.
Gifted to Hamish Keith by von Meier’s partner Marijane Anthony, the 200+ works were in turn generously gifted to Waiheke Community Art Gallery. Keith describes it as ‘a unique account of the beginnings of contemporary New Zealand art: specifically focusing on early creative innovations in 1960’s Auckland’.
A special selection of seven works are available as prints in a limited edition of 25 and the Pat Hanly work ‘The Beach’ is available from an edition of 100. Browse through these works in our shop to purchase.
