About Us

Thirty five minutes into the morning sun from downtown Auckland, lies the beautiful island of Waiheke, home to a lively community of artists, including painters, sculptors, jewellers, photographers, ceramicists and more.

Nestled between world-famous vineyards, olive groves, stunning beaches you will find the Waiheke Community Art Gallery ~Te Whare Taonga o Waiheke. We promote visual arts to an international standard and provide a focal point for arts-related activities.

Our diverse range of exhibitions inspires and delights, bringing the best of New Zealand art to the island and offering the best of Waiheke art to the world. Our wonderful gallery shop features high quality New Zealand ceramics, glass, jewellery and art forms.

The Gallery’s two national award exhibitions attract entries from all over New Zealand. These are the Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award (for 2D work) and the Small Sculpture Prize (3D small works)

The Waiheke Community Art Gallery is an incorporated not-for-profit society, established in 1995. As we are a registered charity, all donations to us are tax deductible.

We are open 363 days a year and have three new exhibitions opening every four weeks. Throughout the year we exhibit the work of more than 100 local artists. Some of our initiatives include:

  • Perpetual Guardian Sculpture on the Gulf, our major biennial event and New Zealand’s leading contemporary outdoor sculpture exhibition which is set on the spectacular Matiatia coastal walkway.
  • The Waiheke Art Map assists visitors to find artists’ studios and experience their work in situ.
  • Opening the doors to Waiheke’s Architectural gems through our summer event the Wonderful Waiheke House Tour.
  • Hosting a biennial Artist in Residence Programme.
  • Personal development through our Summer School facilitated by experienced tutors plus workshops for volunteers and exhibition guides.
  • Supporting community events such Matariki, Sculpt Oneroa, Seaweek and the Waiheke Wine, Food and Art Festival.
  • Working with local schools and community organisations like Bring your Own Bag and Horizons (artists with disabilities).
