Tangaroa and Tāne Mahuta are in constant conflict ever since the wehenga o ngā Mātua tūātahi, Ranginui me Papatūānuku. This is demonstrated in the tukutuku composition in frame making for the internal walls of the wharenui. Prepared strips plain and coloured kiekie are threaded backwards and forwards to create the elaborate tauwīra patterning which holds the cultural narrations of eponymous ancestors. It also stands as testimony to care for our fragile environment, Te Taiao. Tiakina Papa raua ko Rangi.
