Te Moana nui a Kiwa (The great ocean of Kiwa) is a compelling new body of work by Michel Tuffery.

The drawings take their starting point as conceptualised for an immersive waterscape rendered in 3D for Mana Moana Project 2020. Tuffery collaborated with Dr Karlo Mila MNZM to create the Mana Moana Meditation; they are a visual response to the spoken word poetry.

Rich in narrative Tuffery’s new body of work soundly speaks to The Vā. The Vā is a practise in Samoan culture, it envelopes our past, present, and future. The Vā connects us all through our relationships as a space that always already exists, whether we think about it or not, and even when we feel disconnected.

The artworks encompass the processes of Lalaga (weaving) and Lalava (personal communication), and Fa’afanua (mapping), all are elements of “stirring the Vā as we navigate moving forward.
