Artist: Barbara Schaefer

The work is made of hand spun and dyed New Zealand Corriedale fleece which was woven on a two-harness loom using tapestry techniques. The fabric was manipulated, folded, and weighted with paua to create an illusion of movement and being on the sea. This journey is reminiscent of the sea voyage that brought the artist to New Zealand in 2005.

“… and Tāwhirimātea, the wind god, became angry and tore out his eyes throwing the pieces o the heavens where they looked down on humankind.” Following the Matariki star cluster, this waka and crew make their way home to land, family, and friends.
