Heru nunui – (whalebone) comb

Artist: Te Rangi Kaihoro
Materials: Parāoa (whalebone), taura muka, mother of pearl eyes & paua eyes

Hair was carefully groomed and fashioned into a top knot. Heru held the top knot in place and as such were considered personnel property of immense mana because it was so close to the head, the roro or brain. These have become highly sought after for this reason but nobody makes them anymore, so they are precious as relics of our illustrious heritage and Tino Rangatiratanga.
