I am painting in my studio most days during the Covid-19 Lockdown.  I find making images incompatible with feeling concerned about the present and future.  Each new day draws forth new visual responses:  the pervasive sense of uncertainty, the paradox of human close interaction (embraces and face to face conversations) that now evoke a mood of reserve, threat or loss; conversations with friends abroad with the aid of technology that describe interludes of quiet and beauty, as nature gets a rest from human busyness.  Colour and gesture no longer concerned with what is recognisable, but rather the means of feeling and direct response.
