Ellen Johansen

Location: Oneroa

Ellen Johansen writes: “Nature, for me, is a place for visual “immersion”, and provides a point of departure for my work. Fascinated by the visual qualities that I notice in nature, I explore and magnify the colours, textures and surfaces that I see so that these qualities can be seen up close, and a sense of immersion can be captured.”

Ellen completed an MFA at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in Auckland in 2008. Her works have been included as Finalists in both the Walker & Hall Art Award and the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award in the period between 2008 and 2013.

In addition to the Waiheke Community Art Gallery, Ellen’s paintings can also be viewed at Artbay Gallery in Queenstown, where her works are represented and where she was an invited Artist-in-Residence in 2013. She undertakes commissions in her style of “abstracted landscapes” in which the specific size and colour-range of a work can be created to reflect a client’s specific requirements and places of inspiration.

Ellen’s paintings are in private collections in New Zealand and the U.S.
