He Wai Matariki 2014

An exploration of clay, harakeke and pounamu

The annual Members’ Show offers all financial Members of the Waiheke Community Art Gallery the opportunity to exhibit without entry fees. “It’s always a diverse and wide ranging show” says Gallery Director Linda Chalmers, “We have so many highly accomplished art makers living of Waiheke and each year it is very exciting to see the diversity of works coming in.” On show will be paintings, works on paper, sculpture, glass, ceramics, photography textiles and jewellery. The Members Show II will continue through till August 11 and a changeover will occur between 22 and 24 and July.

The Small Gallery and the Annex will feature He Wai, in celebration of Matariki, 2014. Curated by Jeanine Clarkin the show will feature a number of Waiheke artists plus several who are new to exhibiting on Waiheke in an exploration of Pounamu, harakeke and clay.

In addition a programme of workshops will take place each weekend.

Saturday 28 June 11am – 1pm Shona Tawhiao and Mahe Ranginui:
Harakeke Weaving – your opportunity to have a go.

Saturday 5 July 11am – 1pm
Local Soul Sister Mel Davis talks us through Some of the intricacies of Maori Waiata

Saturday 12 July  11am – 1pm Te Kupu:
Artist environmental Activist and Poet Antionio Te Maioha shares his Poetry and discusses the Art of Whaikorero.

Waiheke resident Jeanine Clarkin an experienced Fashion Designer is once again curating the Matariki exhibition. “Jeanine’s many contacts from all parts of New Zealand contribute to the richness of our annual Matariki exhibition always exploring new themes to offer our viewers an enriching experience” says Gallery Director Linda Chalmers.
