Jostle – an exhibition of small works

Plus “Postcards from Waiheke”

The Dinner Party Show

23 May to 23 June 2014

Opening this week at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery is one of the Gallery’s most popular exhibitions. Jostle, the gallery’s exhibition of small artworks has for many years been a favourite within the community as it allows a wide variety of works to be exhibited many of which are created especially for this exhibition by local art aficionados and those who have whimsical sense of humour. A whole range of works can be seen; from paintings to wood carvings, from glass to ceramics. It’s a great opportunity to get something small that is very special. It’s also one of those exhibitions where we see the ingenuity and creativity that is alive within our Waiheke community.

Complimentary to the exhibition is Postcards from Waiheke, this special exhibition of wall works in Postcard size is a silent auction that will be a feature event of the Waiheke Winter Arts Festival Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

This year Postcards from Waiheke replaces the Box auction that has been a feature of Queen’s Birthday for the past two years. The Auction will conclude at a Wine and Cheese event at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery on Sunday 1st June from 5 – 7pm.

Both exhibitions are a feature of the 2014 Open Studio Tour and Waiheke Winter Arts Festival.

This year visitors to the festival can look behind the scenes of 34 artists’ studios located from Oneroa to Awaawaroa. At Awaawaroa the Community House at the Eco village will feature sculpture, glass, textiles, painting and ceramics. In Oneroa the Owhanake Barn will feature the stone sculpture of Nigel Scanlon and weaving by Te Ao Marama Ngarimu, Shona Tawhiao and Betreece Morgan. Queen’s Birthday Weekend is the one weekend in the year when all Waiheke artists’ studios are open from 10am to 4pm and artists are available to talk about their work. To visit purchase a ticket from the Waiheke Community Art Gallery. Tickets are $15 per person and include the Open Studio Map plus a special festival medallion that identifies ticket purchasers.

The Exhibition featuring in the Small Gallery and Annex at this time is The Bach Dinner Party Show. A lively exhibition cups, vessels, platters, candelabra, jugs and vases by many of New Zealand’s most outstanding ceramicists. “It’s an opportunity to bring some colour and drama into your winter dining table” said Gallery Director Linda Chalmers.
