STOP PRESS!! UPDATE TO ARRIVAL TIME: NOW PROJECTED TIME OF ARRIVAL IS @ 2PM MONDAY AFTERNOON!!
Ioane Ioane, who is one of New Zealand’s most distinguised Samoan artists is planning a ritual voyage to Waiheke, in recognition of the Pacific Journey’s to New Zealand to coincide with the Gallery’s next exhibition.
Ioane was going to paddle his traditional Octopus canoe carved on the tiny island of Manono in Samoa, from Maretai to Woodside Bay on Waiheke, prior to its exhibition in the gallery.
After his planned departure from Maretai on Monday morning in a slightly larger waka he is projected to arrive at Woodside Bay, Waiheke approximately 2PM onwards on Monday. (previously earlier)
We would like to invite the community to welcome Ioane and participate in his ritual journey. We would also like a few kayaks and boats to be part of this welcome – please participate.
This arrival will be filmed for screening in the Tira Haere exhibition (26 February – 28 March). Opens Friday 26 at 6pm with a gathering on the Library steps.
Ioane’s four metre hand carved Octopus waka will feature in the Tira Haere exhibition.
