RECLAIM TO FAME 2015: 'Containment vs Freedom' - Something new alongside the familiar.
The 'Reclaim to Fame' exhibition features the transformation of discarded materials into creative art works. This annual event promoted widely throughout the community is an inclusive, inventive cornucopia of artworks. It encourages the creation of innovative, useful, entertaining artworks from pre-used materials destined to become waste. Waiheke has traditionally identified with alternative waste removal and reclamation methods and a large number of community groups are invited to participate. All artworks in this special community focus exhibition must contain at least 80% recycled materials. Each year Waiheke artists come up with ingenious and fascinating artworks. The theme for exploration in 2015 will focus on packaging materials. Entry fee to submit up to two works is $20, submit online via the Call for Entries available soon on the Home page. But you can get started imagining, exploring creating - now! If you are unable to submit online, pop into the gallery to pick up an entry form.
What does Zero waste mean? How do we reconcile the glossiness, protection and convenience of packaging products with their environmental cost? What can you do now with this bag, this box, this printed matter or odd shaped plastiformed container that was born in marketing, reared in a factory, lived it's life in the shop, had a brief moment of glory when it delivered its precious cargo, and is now consigned to senile decay. How can it's nature be illuminated and transformed. How do we free ourselves from repeating the cycle?
A feature of this year’s exhibition will be a People’s Choice Award sponsored by Fullers.
