Enjoy selected wines and hors d'oeuvre by Casita Miro, then walk the red carpet to the cinema for Waiheke's first screening of "Mind Spaces" the Artists Studio with Denis O'Connor, directed and produced by award winning filmmaker Stephanie Bennett. Denis O'Connor's major sculpture,'The Tangler's Cave' will be on display in the library forecourt and can be viewed as part of this event. This work won the Premier Award at headland Sculpture On The Gulf 2011. Denis will be present on the night.
Tickets are $65 per person and includes a DVD copy of Mind Spaces.
The documentary is narrated by renowned New Zealand artist and sculptor Denis O’Connor. He guides us through the film about that ‘sacred’ space which is unique to each artist. This film focuses on two of the most famous of those artists – Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. The film was prompted by the untimely death of his daughter archaeologist Dr. Blaze O’Connor who was part of the team that relocated the Bacon studio to Dublin and with whom he had began conversations about the artist’s studio. Three years later he returned to Ireland and the Bacon Studio and the conversations with the team from Hugh Lane Gallery responsible for its relocation and the uncovering of links with the detritus in the studio to some of Bacon’s most famous works. Denis also had discussion with author Martin Gayford whose book “The Man with the Blue Scarf” documented his relationship and observations of Lucian Freud. Denis takes us into his own studio, which he has occupied for 40 years - his “mindspace” and takes us through its history and how it resonates in his work even today including his recent works on “The Tangler” He talks about his relationship with Blaze, who in footage filmed before her death talks about the influence of Denis and his studio.
Renowned actor Conor Lovett represents Denis “otherself” through poetry and spoken word.
