Artist's Statement
"..This unique exhibition is the culmination of many years of fascination with the
passive expression, hence my intrigue with face to face portraits.
I enjoy creating artworks where the viewer is fully engaged and can create a narrative of their own.
These paintings are all portraits with ideally, a ‘resting face’. What do the eyes tell you? What are they
thinking?
I strive for a sense of drama; in that they have a black background which focuses the viewer solely on the
subject at hand. That way, in my mind, I am creating paintings, not pictures. I study and research each
subject carefully before committing them to a drawing and then crafting the image with oil paint. Every
portrait I paint provides me with the opportunity to create a work of art that exhibits both beauty and
timelessness.
My work is represented by major galleries in New Zealand and Australia and I am fortunate to have won
many awards for both my paintings and my sculpture.
I have a Diploma, and a Master’s in Fine Art Degree and my studio is in Opua, the Bay of Islands. In the last couple of years I have extended my art practice to include teaching the art of painting."
