Sequence addresses the fraught relationship between continuity and rupture in the construction of moments, memories, and identities. It foregrounds the invisible boundaries that exceed visible divisions—those unseen traces where inclusion and exclusion coalesce and fracture.
Situated within these liminal thresholds—where form, interpretation, and belonging are perpetually negotiated—the work destabilises fixed notions of identity, allowing for a fluid, processual unfolding.
Seung Yul Oh (b. 1981, Seoul) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Auckland, New Zealand, whose practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, video, performance, and public art. Combining East Asian popular culture with playful yet incisive references to Western art history, Oh creates works that often toy with scale and blur the line between spectacle and participation.
His projects range from immersive inflatable environments and monumental bubbles to hyperreal sculptures of Korean noodles and reflective animal forms. Parallel to these exuberant works is a minimalist painting practice informed by Tansaekhwa (Dansaekhwa), the post-war Korean monochrome movement that emphasizes meditative process and material engagement.
Oh has exhibited widely across Asia and Oceania, with solo presentations at ONE AND J. Gallery (Seoul), Starkwhite (Auckland), Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, and City Gallery Wellington. Major public commissions include Orbit (2024, Melbourne), recipient of the Rider Levett Bucknall RLB Award for Best Public Art Project, and Anechoic Assemble (2022, Auckland). His works are held in the National Gallery of Victoria, Te Papa Tongarewa, Auckland Art Gallery, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, and the Amorepacific Museum of Art.
